THE ARCHITECTURE

image       There are two principal architectural styles found in Northen Romagna. The first being the simple, rustic architecture of the region's farmhouses and cottages, and the second the more elegant style of the houses found in Romagna Toscana.
The countryside is full of beautiful old stone farmhouses which have largely remained unchanged over the years. They are built without using plaster, and invariably have an enormons old brick fireplace. These are real working farms surrounded by trees, bushes and fruit trees. Each house has a yard which faces north to allow rain water to drain away, and its here that the hard agricultural work takes place.
The farm is the heart of the rural economy; and every part of the farm has its role. The farm is a home for both people and animals and the place where the crops are worked.
Houses constructed in the "Tuscan style" are very different from both the farm houses of the country and the other buildings found in the towns; as their architectural style, "stile toscano", is heavily influenced by the Florence style or "Stile Fiorentino". In fact they are beautiful houses typically featuring arches, towers, friezes, wrought iron balconies and coats of arms painted on the walls. imageFine examples of "architettura fiorentina" (the typical architectural style of Florence) can be seen in the humpbacked bridges in Portico, Bocconi, Premilcuore, and Modigliana; in the government buildings of Bagno di Romagna and Terra del Sole featuring coats of arms made of sandstone; in the buildings and streets of Modigliana; in Portico's old town centre; and in the coats of arms, decorations and door lintels of the houses of Rocca San Casciano.
However, the architectural style of Florence can be best seen in the town of Terra del Sole; with its large squares, elegant buildings; designed by the best architects of the age: Baldassare Lanci and his son Marino, Camerini, Genga, and Buontaletti. It is the combination of the grace and art of Florence and the wild, rough nature of the places and people of the region that gives Romagna Toscana its disctinctive character.
