image       The Appenine mountains dominate the landscape in the northen part of Romagna; mountains which run from north to east in central Italy and which reach an altitude of 1658 metres. From the peak of the mountain we find the source of the Bidente, Rabbi, Tramazzo, Montone and Savio rivers.
This is a harsh land, with a difficult climate and with a high anual rainfall and snowfall which makes for a difficult life and which conditions to a certain extent the character of its inhabitants.
Up unhil the beginning of the century the principal economic activity of the people was agricultural; this was an undeveloped land which was almost cut off from the rest of Italy due to poor roads making economic development difficult. Inevitably the industralization of the cities of the plain which began at the beginning of the century, caused many to move to the cities in search of work and a better standard of living.
This was the beginning of a great migration from the small towns to the cities which resulted in the abandoning of whole towns, and an incredible decrease in the number people living in the countryside. However what seemed to be the death of a region in its day, proved to be its salvation. This mass migration left behind an unpolluted and wild land of forests and parks and is incredibly popular with tourists today.
