BORGO TOSSIGNANO

One of the little resorts of Santerno valley is Borgo Tossignano. Here every Shrove Tuesday take place the appetizing festival "Sagra dei Maccheroni", meanwhile in the rising above nucleus of Tossignano the Shrove Tuesday festival is dedicated since 1611 to "Polenta" ( thick maize porridge served with meat, cheese, Tartuffe, etc...).
So, tasting maccheroni and polenta you can admire the beauty of the gypseous stone that overlook the valley.
Human settlement start from the prehistoric period, in fact has been discovered tombs ruins of the "villanoviano" period and also many human remains.
Borgo Tossignano is not only in a beautiful panoramic position, but also in a strategic one, and this was the cause that forced, for many centuries, its inhabitants to be submitted to many rules: from Visconti family to Manfredi one, to the Napoleonic French rule to the Papalini one, and so on...
Very interesting to visit are the public cistern and the Palazzo Baronale palace ( XVII century).
The "Vena del Gesso" is certainly the most attractive of this zone. It is long about 15 kilometres and large 2, and it is considered as the most long gypsum valley of Europe, even if its high is just about the 500 meters.
When, five millions years ago, the Straits of Gibraltar was closed buy some earth tremors, all the Mediterranean sea-side water evaporated, and it leaved gypsum deposits, marls and salts that was pushed in surface.
This natural phenomenon took place along all the ridge of Appennino, from Piemonte to Sicilia, but only in our zone this characteristic is really evident.
The southern side of this valley is nearly vertical and it is a sort of wall long from Sillaro river to Lamone one.
