FONTANELICE

On the Emilia street after Borgo Tossignano, you reach Fontanelice, an old resort that was destroyed by a landslip on 1748.
Fontanelice has prehistoric origins: according to a legend the name Fons Ilicis symbolized a fountain near an ilex.
Medieval events, quite similar to those of the other village in the valley, were causes of fights against feudatories.
Here was born Mengoni architect, that built Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery in Milan.
Mengoni's Gallery project was projected agains every tendency of the moment, the neoclassic one, by using new materials as steel and glass.
Fonselice dedicate to this famous architect Museums talking about Mengoni's history.
Here you can also visit Alidosi tower (500 century), Madonna della Consolazione Church, and in Monte Volpe also the king Tiberio cave. Tiberio legend told that he received a prophecy : he should be struck and killed by a lightning. So he sheltered with all his court in a cave on Monte Volpe to avoide his destiny. But during a sunshine day, he went out from the cave with his horse: the sky become suddenly dark and he was stroked by the lightning.
Also in Fonselice you can taste same typical dishes. Every Easter Monday you can eat a fried cake called "Piè freta".
Thanks to the business of wine, about 1500 quintal a year, Fonselice is recognised by the National "Enoteca of Siena" as one of the 311 "Italian city of wine".
