MERCATO SARACENO

      Mercato Saraceno, built on the old ruins of a village (XII century) rises on the left side of Savio river. The first documents that testify the village existence are dated about XIII century, when "Forum Saraceni" was governed by the Sarsina bishop.
The name of the village has not Moslem origins, but it come from a "saraceno", an ancient gentleman of the village.
The main activity of Mercato Saracno during the domination of the Ravenna church, until XIX century, was the commerce.
In 1800 it was considered as an important mineral centre for the big presence of sulphur-mines and today it is a flourishing agriculture land where also handicraft industry has taken a big importance.
Since XV to XVIII century it has developed a characteristic handicraft activity to produce colds of refractory earth utilized to fuse the sulphur.
In the past also gypsum mines were sources of many activity.
In the old town centre is possible to visit Santa Maria Nuova Church, in which inner are conserved two frescos by Cristoforo Serra a painter of 1600 from Cesenatico. To visit is also the Dolcini palace recently restored, today seat of the public theatre realized between 1926-1927 in liberty style with really interesting decorations realized with enamels.
      F ar 6 kilometres from Mercato Saraceno on a Monte Sorbo top, rise the old parish Church " Pieve di Santa Maria Annunziata". It has unknown origins but certainly really ancient.
The outside of the church is built in stones and lateritious, the apse is in Romanic style.
The study of the church has taken to think that the today plan is not the original one. Along the naves are conserved beautiful marble tombstones. Over the altar a XVIII century ciborium; the shrine conserves a copy of a sweet work of art "Madonna on Bambino" by Bartolomeo di Mastro Gentilo from Urbino, the original one lies in the Museum Diocesano di Arte Sacra in Sarsina.
