ROCCA SAN CASCIANO

The village rises on Montone valley floor. The centre of this old village is Garibaldi square dominated by the Pretorio Palace. Really interesting to see is a rich funeral outfit of and ancient gallic warrior, today conserved in the archaeological museum in Forlì. The village origins comes from an ancient parish "Plebes Sancti Cassini in Casatico", the ancient name of Montone river, where the village was built.
As other villages, Rocca was dominated by many different families, becoming in 1381 property of Florence. Really important for Rocca was the rule of court of justice for the two regions Romagna and Toscana. In 1923 Rocca was submitted by the province of Forlì.
Garibaldi square (1200), has a triangular perimeter , and here rises Suffragio Church, built in 1661 after the earthquake. In its inner are conserved a precious picture of robbiana school (XV century), and a suggestive Holy Trinity by Giovanni Stradano (1500).
In the square centre rises the beautiful Pretorio palace. The architectonical building includes a big clock and bells tower today still operatives.
In the ancient church Santa Maria is venerated the "Madonna delle Lacrime": a holy image built in terracotta ( XV century) protagonist of the miracle the 17th January 1523. Other really interesting building to see is the ancient bridge "Ponte Vecchio" for its particular architectonical building.
To visit is also the San Donnino Abbey, built during the X century it was the site of the dominate religious centre. In its inner it is possible to see restored frescos by the school of Rimini.
The "Falò festival" has ancient origins, perhaps medieval, that coincided with the San Giuseppe one. In the lands, peasant used to welcome the Spring by lighting many bonfires and praying S. Giuseppe to give their a good harvests.
Today during this popular festival takes part also a challenge against the three quarters -Borgo, Mercato and Bugiello -by lighting three different bonfires. The winner is the only one who is able to realize the bigger bonfire.
During July and August takes part the " Rocca San Casciano festival": a festival to remind Carlo Albero Cappelli, a famous theatrical manager, who was born in Rocca.
