The Marecchia valley is characterised by a continuous succession of flaky clays interrupted by rocky spurs, which vary in shape and size, where fortresses and castles have been built over the centuries. The originality and uniqueness of the territory, especially from a geological point of view, has no parallel in the whole of Romagna.
The water-course crossing the valley named after it, springs in Tuscany from Alpe della Luna Mount and before reaching Romagna it flows towards Rimini going through the territory of the region Marche (namely Pesaro district). The valley is marked by a strong presence of hillsides from which you can enjoy a suggestive and charming landscape enriched by the neighbouring Adriatic Sea.
Well known and important is the naturalistic reserve created inside Marecchia Park that developed along the banks of the homonymous river.
This protected area hosts thousands of species amongst birds, mammals and amphibians as well as a flora garden and a pond. The valley includes the communes of Torriana and Verucchio. Torriana stands on the ridge between the valleys of the rivers Uso and Marecchia.
Its position, extremely strategic, made Torriana seat of a very much contended fortress in the past. Definitely worth a visit is the neighbouring castle of Montebello, a very suggestive place that inspired many legends and tales of magic and ghosts.
Verucchio maintained a typical and well-preserved medieval structure. It hosts a very famous and strategically situated fortress that was lost by the Malatestas (a noble family ruling Rimini's territories) because of a siege won by means of a trick. Notable is also the little centre of Villa Verucchio developed at the edge of the Marecchia Park.
