THE VALLEY OF RIVER RUBICONE

This valley, the last strip of land of Forlì-Cesena province, owes its fame to the river that crosses it. Although historians have no irrefutable evidence that river Rubicone is the one that Julius Caesar crossed uttering the famous words "Alea iacta est!" ("the die is cast"), nowadays this river is commonly identified with the antique river Rubicone of Roman history.
The name Rubicone comes from Latin Rubico, probably for the reddish colour of its waters.
The land of this valley is a mild plain, scattered with gentle hills. Its only striking feature is the great number of small villages that rose one the remains of medieval castles and fortresses that make the landscape particularly charming. The valley is crossed by an adequate number of comfortable and panoramic roads that lead to the major towns as well as to smaller villages like Sorrivoli, Montecodruzzo and Monteleone.
River Uso marks the eastern border of this valley that connects the plain of Romagna with Montefeltro area. Rubicone valley includes the villages of Sogliano al Rubicone, Roncofreddo, Borghi, Montiano and Longiano.
Sogliano al Rubicone is situated at a height of 400 meters by the watershed between river Uso and river Rubicone. The major economic strong point of this area is the formaggio di fossa, a special brand of cheese that ripens for months in special tuff caves.
Roncofreddo rises on the ridge between river Rubicone and river Rigossa and due to its strategic location it was always involved in the toughest disputes, especially during Malatesta domination. One of the main features of its flourishing agriculture is the production of green peas.
Borghi is situated on the ridge between river Uso and river Rubicone, underneath Sogliano. Borghi is famous for the production of the "blustrengo", a local cake, and for the "raperonzolo" festival. Montiano is a small village on the hills between Cesena and Rimini, a land rich in olive trees and vineyards.
Longiano, a few kilometres away from via Emilia, is a lively town and its cutural, theatrical and musical activities are well-known all over Romagna.
