THE VALLEY OF RIVER TRAMAZZO

The valley of river Tramazzo is situated on the Apennines at the border between the territory of Faenza and the province of Forlì-Cesena western end. River Tramazzo runs west of river Lamone wider basin, and it flows into river Marzano (the main tributary of river Lamone), together with rivers Ibola and Aceterra, when it reaches the village of Modigliana, at a height of 185 meters above sea level.
The soil in this valley does not show actual gypseous formations, but it is dominated by the typical marly stones of this Apennines stretch. As far as the local flora is concerned, hornbeams, downey oaks and beechwoods can be found at higher heights. The valley of river Tramazzo comprises the area of two villages, Tredozio, on the mountain, and Modigliana on the hills.
Tredozio is situated on a plain, in the centre of a wide mountain river basin. Due to its strategic position, originally Tredozio was an important trade hub, a mercatale (a place of merchants). It belonged to Florence since the beginning of XV century and it was included in the province of Forlì only in 1923. Nowadays it is a thriving tourist resort.
It is worth visiting upstream lake Fonte (or del Bepi), formed at 950 meters a.s.l. by an artificial barrage in the course of river Tredozio. It is comprised in the territory of Foreste Casentinesi National Park and it is a renowned resort for sport fishing and summer holidays.
The origins of Modigliana date back to the prehistoric age. In the Middle Ages it was a feud of Counts Guidi and in XIV century it went under Florentine rule. In 1923 Modigliana was annexed to the province of Forlì together with Tredozio and today it has a central position in the economic scenario of the valley, carrying out intense entrepreneurial activities in agriculture (especially kiwi production) and handicraft.
